POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
POSITION TITLE: Assistant Director of Public Education
and
Grassroots Advocacy
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Director for Asylum and Immigration
Concerns
POSITION OBJECTIVES:
With special concern for post-9/11 realities, identify
policy objectives, develop strategies and tools for
achieving objectives and carry out strategies to assist
and advocate on behalf of the most vulnerable immigrants
in INS detention. These include asylum seekers, refugees,
torture survivors, legal permanent residents, families,
unaccompanied minors, women, and those in indefinite
detention. Build grassroots educational and advocacy
capacity and link local grassroots concerns and solutions
to national advocacy collaborations.
QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE:
1. Excellent verbal and written communication skills
are required.
2. The candidate will demonstrate the ability to work
collegially and
effectively within LIRS and with diverse coalitions
of non-governmental organizations, as well as with governmental
agencies.
3. A law degree or comparable familiarity with U.S.
immigration policy, especially the area of immigration
detention and civil liberties, is strongly preferred.
4. Demonstrate ability to quickly master substantive
legal and policy issues and proven ability to design
strategies leading to effective policy solutions.
5. Ability to work under pressure and with a certain
degree of independence is essential.
6. Ability to travel occasionally.
7. Spanish language ability preferred but not required.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
1. In light of post-9/11 realities, identify campaign
policy objectives for Forgotten Refugee Campaign (FRC),
develop collaborative advocacy, media, and educational
strategies to meet objectives, and lead campaign.
2. Develop campaign priorities, strategies, materials,
written analysis and coalition work to maximize the
FRC's and the Asylum & Detention unit's contribution
the LIRS overall advocacy and public education plan,
as well as to maximize LIRS's contribution the Detention
Watch Network (DWN) and other non-governmental coalition
efforts.
3. Develop the campaign (FRC) in close consultation
with the Director
> and staff of Asylum & Immigration Concerns, LIRS Washington
DC office and Communications office, and other relevant
LIRS staff.
4. Increase the number of grassroots individuals and
organizations relating directly to LIRS and strengthen
collaborations so that the campaign message and objectives
are shared by other national agencies and nationwide
networks.
5. Provide technical assistance to advocacy groups,
individuals and
collaborating networks involved in the campaign.
6. Secure grants, donations and other resources to sustain
campaign and other LIRS grassroots advocacy and education
efforts.
7. Assist in the planning and organization of national
and regional NGO conferences and meetings to advance
LIRS's asylum and detention advocacy and education objectives.
8. Mobilize leaders of FRC campaign through national
gatherings, regional meetings and/or telephonic and
electronic communication and action alerts.
9. Perform related duties as necessary.
10. Other tasks as assigned.

SALARY AND TERMS: Negotiable, and commensurate with
experience. This full-time, exempt position is in the
grade level 21. The minimum salary for this position
is $30,480. An excellent benefit package is offered.
